ERC Martin Currie Race Team

Although winter is usually the quiet season for cycling, the members of the team have still been busy on their bikes.  Cyclocross and track league racing have been the main, but not only, competitive focus and many miles have been logged on training rides, coaching sessions, rollers and turbos.

Probably our keenest cyclocross racer has been Emma Borthwick.  She participated in most rounds of the Scottish series and the Scottish Championships, managing to remain undefeated in Scotland over the season.  She took the Under 16 girls series and championship titles.  Also regulars at cross have been Eleanor Strathdee and Anna and Sean Flynn – all 3 picked up bronze medals in the Under 14 or Under 12 category at the Scottish Championships and all names to watch for the future.

Wednesday night Track league at Glasgow has been fantastic – with many of the team gaining accreditation and traveling through to Glasgow to practice their track skills.  It really has been great to see so many youngsters – from both East and West  - at the track league and just goes to show that there is a huge appetite for track cycling amongst the youths in Scotland.

MCRT were lucky enough to have 3 team members accepted to ride in the Future Stars event at the final round of the Revolution series in Glasgow.  It was a fantastic opportunity, which all three enjoyed greatly – however I am sure we will see many more Scottish youngsters in this event in future years.

Finally on the winter racing side, one of our young riders took part in the grueling 24 hour Strathpuffer mountain bike race.  Held in the depths of winter this event is a true physical and mental test and Ben Forsyth, riding with 2 friends from Peebles and 1 from Perth, managed to come 2nd in the team competition.  (He says that but for a mechanical problem they would have won!)

However, winter is almost done and the racing season starts soon.  This year the team will again target British series and championships in the Road, Track and MTB XC disciplines and hopefully we can throw in a trip overseas as well.  Much organizing to be done!

Many thanks again the Braveheart Fund for granting us an award for 2013.
