On Sunday 30 January 2011, Claire Thomas was out training in Belgium, when a car turning across the bike path knocked her off her bike.
Claire said:
"I was cycling down a hill on the bike path and a women turned right across it right from a main road right in front of me. I flew over the bonnet to the other side of the car, but to a soft grass landing. I was extremely visible with my Horizon Fitness jacket and gilet as some of my supporters told me they had seen my 30 seconds before it happened."
Claire went to hospital with facial lacerations, where she had stitches to her eye and lip. There is also a severed nerve, meaning she has no feeling from her eye to her hairline. She is hopeful this will return soon. She is also suffering some back pain, broken teeth and lots of cuts and bruises to her lower body. Claire credits 2 sets of gloves and 5 jerseys for the lack of injuries to her upper body.
Her carbon Scott frame was cracked, front wheel, front & rear mech and handlebars were all damaged too.
Claire said:
"I am glad to be alive but emotionally drained, constantly tired and in pain. I am getting my stiches out next Monday and maybe will get back on my bike after that and try and restart my endurance training."
We wish Claire all the best for a full and speedy recovery.
