Of quite sure what questions to ask here, but I'm looking for info on the Bellisle Road Club to accompany some photo scans I have been given.

I know they were glasgow based but Where did they ride?
What were they about? Seem to have had some pretty handy racers.
Any insight into the origin of the Bellisle name?
Also keen to know more about when they were disbanded in the mid 50s.
I saw elsewhere that hey were restarted mid 70s-80s but it is the 50s era I am looking into at the mo.

Cheers
Owen

You'll find Gerry McDaid's phone number in any SCU Handbook, under Commissaires,if you can remember Handbooks!
Now the Dandy's going the same way-----on-line!

[br]Bigjim- I just followed on that with Frank, who was able to confirm one or two things for me but didn't have much other info.

He suggested I contact Gerry McDaid, does anyone have details for him?

If you are still looking for info on the Belleisle Road Club of the 50s/60s can I suggest you contact John Stein (ex Gale member) GwnSteinATaol.com who is in fairly regular contact with ex Belleisle member Denny Devlin now in Galashiels. Hope this helps in your search.

Aye - Finnie and Millsie joined. Millsie had the disctinction of being able to remove his trackie bottoms without stopping. He was in a car which hit a van going over the bridge at Shettleston station and done his inner ear in - couldnt balance. Wullie was a wideo alright! Millsie lived in Barlanark at the lights - you could see him sometimes fixing his bike on the veranda.

Brilliant !!!

Was Frank's wee brother young Wullie? I think Stevie and Boaby Finnegan also joined the "new" Belleisle, with Brian Millar and Terry McGhee, so the "wide-boy" ratio was pretty high.

Hi folks,

Thanks for all the replies. It's always interesting to see where a thread leads.

The memories from the 80s are great, I should do a piece focusing on that time but for he moment I need to stay on task and keep digging into the 50s era Belleisle RC.

Interesting that they were still going in the 60s, I had thought that they might have been disbanded. The background to this query relates to some stuff I have on the VC Stella. When VCS started in 53 or so, I think a fair few Belleisle members might have gone across.

Thanks for all the contacts and tips, I will follow up.

Owen

The Bellisle restarted about 1979, the Frank and his wee brother were in it plus a few riders from the Eagle. I heard his we brother got banned from Rattrays for asking if he could use the phone and calling his Aunt in Australia.

Didn't Alan Mcauley win the 1988 Junior RR championships in Dundee?

Here is 1987 Junior Championships at Kilmarnock. Can't remember if you were senior or racing junior by then?

I think you're right Fergus I got Alan and Stevie the wrong way round. Stevie also got a medal at Kilmarnock, when Gordon Plenderleith (in second place?) had to walk across the line with cramp.
I did that race in Kilmarnock, it was one of my first. To the far left of that picture, just in front of Keith it looks like a skinny version of one of the guys responsible for the BH fund!

That's right. Tom Mdonald was good junior cyclist in 1986. Can see him here leading, with David Johnson of Royal Albert chasing.

this is 1986, Junior Grand Prix. Taken on a circut around Ormiston, Humbie area, East Lothian. It's a picture at the start line about half way between Pencaitland and the A68, near the junction to go down to Ormiston. Here is same race in 1987 at the place near where the start is in the 1986 picture http://wwwfgw24902com.shutterfly.com/pictures/34

Here is same road race in 1986 same road nr Ormiston..the distant hills in background are other side of forth estuary I think

Hi Jimmy, that is me ion VC Olympia jersey. Andy Young won junior champs in 1987 at Kilmarnock, beat Gordon Plenderleith. can't remember who was 3rd. 1986 was at Cathkin braes and Gordon Barr won it. I think Andy 2nd or 3rd. My best was 4th at Junior RR champs in 1987.

i recall top road man to be stevie finnigan, think stevie left the eagle road club to join.i remember wullie anderson senior starting it up again and a few members defected at the time, think cammy fisher should be able to let us know. both clubs were at the time based around easterhouse east glasgow area..although this is not the belleisle the topic is about eh?

try and get hold of frankie anderson,i heard he is back racing ,could be with the mid scotland clarion?his father wullie started the later bellisle and was also an original member in the 50S,frankie is the only one that could have some memorabilia from the original club, but im sure you will get plenty info from jimmy and big jim.i think big jim is the place to start with getting hold of frankie due to the clarion link.another good sourse of info is tommy banks, glasgow wheelers.

Their colours,in the early 60's were a copy of the Italian RR Champion,ie Green, white and red,one of the classiest of all time, later to appear on the 7-11 jersey.
Their championship team Stephen mentions also incuded ome UCI Commissaire-to-be,namely Gerry McDaid.
I may be wrong but I seem to remember this team was specifically put together for that purpose, with Fraser reverting to the JW and Gerry to the'Gale after.
And who could forget the firebrand that was Willie Anderson, the scourge of Centre meetings, and father of Frank.
