Scanning in the scrapbook of a former club member I came across this photo of a major Scottish race...
Anyone want to place a guess on either of the two riders, or the event? Don't think I'll be complaining about bad road surfaces for a while

It was the decent off the Lecht. The surface had been stripped off in preparation for a resurfacing job. Tricky bit of road but most of us made it through. |

My Dad rode the Grampians and I remember him talking with some awe about it going over the Lecht. I think they also went over the Cairnwell Pass up the Devils Elbow, which saw quite a few walking - so quite a race! |

Back in the mid 50's I rode on a long weekend,Glasgow to Perth, Lecht,Devil's Elbow,Tomintoul,Aviemore ,Glencoe back to Glasgow (friday night to Monday) don't remember the Lecht being anywhere near that condition! |

The year is 1971. I'm not sure of the location but can find out. There were a lot of punctures that day.
Rider 27 is Phil Templeton, currently riding the Snow Roads Audax with George Berwick on a tandem.. He provided the photo.
It is the Tour of the Grampians.
