Well done to Catriona Phinn who, in her first road race, won the inaugural Lake APR Feminine.

Thanks to Jez for organising this!

Sorry, I can't remember the results from the guys' race.

I will second that well done Jez and team, without you people there would be no racing! I was well impressed with the amount of marshalls that turned up and helped out of their own time.

Cheers,
Craig.

I wasn't taking part today because I didn't get my entry in on time. I came a long to watch and it looked a very well organised event. Well done to all involved.

It was great to see a ladies only event with 30 odd riders in it. I hope this has encouraged a lot of the newcomers to take part in more events.

OK, here's my little gripe. It was obvious that the 1st group in the ladies race had 3 or 4 very strong riders in it. If you're new to road racing, organisers need as much relevant information as possible in order to put you in the right group and make a balanced race.

Out of interest I Googled a few of the names from the 1st group. I noticed some accomplished triathletes.

The winner of the ladies race is one of them and was the first female to finish the Etape Caledonia a few years back (in under 4 hours). One of the runners up is quoted by the Daily Record as being a hopeful for a place in the Scottish Cycling Team for the Commonwealth Games and another targeting the triathlon world championships in her age group.

It would've seemed sensible for these participants to divulge this info on their entry forms.

Anyway gripe over. Excellent event guys. I'll try to get my entry in sooner next year.

It's really uplifting to see so many women out today. Fantastic: everyone should be proud of their efforts. Keep up the hard work and see you all next year.

Or maybe at the Sandy Wallace's Vets and Women's race (part of a series), on the 16th of May!

Really good to see the enthusiasm out on the road today, plenty of lady racers for a change, proving they deserve and will support events, so other organisers take note, they need these events to get a number pinned on their back, hopefully we'll see them out there during 2010. Plus having seen first hand (from the comms car) the work the Falkirk guys and others put in the last couple of groups, I'm sure it will all pay off in the coming season even if it didn't pay off this time, it's still early doors, keep fighting.

Jeremy,
It was in fact me in the first group ~ trying to get my gilet up over my number as I crossed the line ~ sorry for making the judge's job even more difficult than it needed to be ~ must have been the excitement of the finish. No other Ayr Roads rider was in the group.

Super event.......

Interesting to note that the biggest finishing groups only had 2 riders in each? Is there more of a general spread in the ability of the ladies compared to the gents who were riding?

Noting that many of the names are newcomers to finishing sheets, would there be a requirement for a women's coaching weekend to concentrate on bunch skills etc? Most of the gaps between riders are 30 secs or more. Did the groups split on the hills only, or was it the flatter sections too? Only 1 DNF is fantastic - well done to all who rode.

Just an observation

Gordon, I think it is a combination of all the things you mention. SC have set up a working group looking into womens racing and I believe coaching sessions are planned.

What this shows is that there are women out their who want to race but are put off by racing with men. I do hope other organisers follow suit

I still think that the combined women/v60 men formula works well. That way the women can learn bunch skills. Maybe a shame for the v60 men though!

Gordon what you think is correct, the range of ability between the women riders is wider than you get with the mens groups. You did have some riders racing on the road for the first time with no history to compare ability, therefore off in the first group. This split very quickly as did the second group.
Its up to someone to try and put on more events for the ladies, whether the Vets & Womens events or more APR's. If they do enter the Vets and womens you're still going to get a splintering quiet quickly.

This topic should maybe be continued under a new heading?

Thought I should post cos I am a bit embarrassed to be the one dnf out of the whole field. This was my first race...and I learned a valuable lesson...that you shouldn't take a turn if there is no marshal telling you to take it! I was within a mile or so of the finished and was pretty much dazed and confused, when a big bunch of male riders came past and turned left down a road signposted Balfron. So I followed them cos there was nobody else to be seen and I though it must be blokes coming round on their 2nd lap. By the time I had gone down a big hill I knew I had made an error but I just didn't have it in me to go back up the hill! Oops!!

Still, great to do my first race in a womens event. Thanks to the others in the 2nd group who kept me right (until I got dropped after 6 miles that is!).

Being privy to the race results and having advised youngsters, if you have a pony tail, make sure your number is low enough not to be obscured by said pony tail. That goes for you ladies as well as the gentleman concerned

Diana, sorry to hear about your wrong turn. It doesn't seem to have put you off: excellent. Hope to see you at more races soon.

Don't be embarrassed: even experienced riders have taken wrong turns when racing. I don't want to name names, I'll let Mark B tell you about it himself. Oops

And before anyone says anything: I did once get so lost on a club ride that I had to get the train home.

I had a post written out that said the above, Martin's says it in a much shorter way!

The idea of short apr's like this is fantastic and a big THANK YOU to
Jez and the team for organising it. They got new faces in women's
cycling in the bunch yesterday, thats just brilliant!

More short apr's for women is the way forward, its not a scary distance and if the groups are right (which would happen with more events to help to decide the handicaps) then you get a great feeling of a race environment, if you are successful at it then there is a great scheme at SC to help.

I do think however that you must be open about your experience, and the finds of 'frenchdave' earlier answered a lot of my questions, there were girls in the first group (let alone the 2nd group) with far more road 'riding' experience than me who had (until now) none, BUT because I entered a few TTs last year and wrote that down I got put in group 2, if you write nothing and I write something the handicappers can only assume you are totally 'new'.

BUT of course you could be a 'star' in the making... Now that would be a nice find for Scottish women's racing!

dholt - as for dnf'ing, don't you worry about that, thanks to Anne I got back on my bike and continued to the finish line, if we had met you we would have dragged you there with us
