Worst secret ever thanks to our shameless plugging... Ayr Roads CC have secured financial backing and support to run the 47th David Bell Memorial RR as a National A event on the 10th June 2012 starting and finishing in Girvan. Full details will be emerging over time at http://www.southcarrickdaviebell.org
As you can imagine, its a big undertaking and if anyone would like to get involved or can offer support we'd be delighted to hear from you.
We're also looking to build upon the content of the website around the history of the event. Do you have a story or memory of competing in the race? If so, we'd love to hear it, good or bad...
Cheers guys,
Chris Johnson

Puncture stories?
only kidding the girvan start is even further south than normal but better for the english riders that may take part possibly, bit of a trek for north of scotland riders though overnight stay methinks. |

| Roddy is getting his races mixed up, he outsprinted me and Andy Young in 1991 I don't know if Davie Gibson was even riding. He did puncture when he was in the break that bit is right! |

| I think Davie won it four times and his first win didn't come until he was 37 or 38. Whatever it was it was a fair age to start winning one of the hardest races in Scotland. |

Broke his gear cable one year leaving him with the big and wee rings - still won by about 5mts.
At least he didn't have to dodge flying helmets |

| Richard has a worse memory than Roddy Riddle. Four in the break; he beat me Graham Brown and Ronnie Todd. |

That's some memory you've got Neil - you can remember everybody that's beaten you in a gallop |

I can also remember the names of all the riders who have never outsprinted me. Stuart Macgregor...that's it.

Rather unfortunately, the Smithfield Nocturne has been announced the night before the Davie Bell making it very difficult for some of the big teams to attend.
However, this does create an excellent opportunity for our Scottish E/1/2 riders to enter the event with some real confidence in actually performing. We are still expecting a fantastic field with a great mix of teams from right across the UK, and racing level is set to be very high.
Entry is now open and i'd encourage everyone eligible to give it a go and support our event. Don't be shy, this is what those licence points were for!
For those of us who haven't yet attained 2nd cat status, there is the 100k Highwayman Audax running on Saturday 9th too, taking in all the roads that make the Davie Bell unique. Entry just 8.

Remember riding it at least twice, first as a 1st yr Senior. Got a bus from Glasgow down to Ayr, wheels off and bike on the luggage platform at the front of the double decker. Bottle of juice and a packet of Jaffa cakes. Dropped somewhere in darkest Ayrshire after the Nick. Must have finished but cant remember, sometime in the early 60s. Second recollection is riding over the Nick in 2 inches of sleety snow in the break, 6 in the break so was probably 6th |
