New Team

Louise Borthwick | Sunday 16th March, 2014

First off Iíd like to say thanks to Braveheart Fund for funding me for the first time, itís great to have the backing and recognition from the Fund. Just thought Iíd write a wee bit about myself first off.. I started racing bikes 5 years ago aged 14, starting in mountain biking. I soon discovered a love for road racing and have stuck with that ever since. Iíve had brief spells racing in the Basque country and Holland as a youth and junior which taught me the more about bike racing than anything else.  Really want to do more on the continent in the future.

Last year was my second year racing in senior womens races, mainly in the National Womenís Series where I finished 5th overall. I got to compete in some top level races with my best results a 5th at the British Crit Champs and 2nd at the Westminster GP, which was held before the final stage of the Tour of Britain. Those races and some others I did (like the London Nocturne) made it onto the television.  My performances meant I was approached by Stefan Wyman and offered the chance of signing for his team Matrix Fitness - Vulpine.  As this is one of the top British womens teams, I jumped at the opportunity and am very pleased with the decision as it has just been announced the team has a ride in The Womenís Tour (of Britain).  My next job is to make sure I make the team for the race.

My training has been going well this winter and, thanks to Asda, I managed to get away from the cold to New Zealand for 5 weeks. They didnít sponsor me or anything, but they did give me a job as a groceries picker. (Didnít like the 5am starts though!) I have just come back from my team launch down in Manchester and am off to France at the end of this week for a team training camp. My first race with the team will be at the Tour of the Reservoir on the 12th of April and then the season kicks off proper.  Riding in a team for the first time is going to be exciting and, with Helen Wyman as the road captain, I hope to keep learning and improving.

Thanks for the interest and will update Braveheart throughout the season.
